Cyclobenzaprine (generic Flexeril) relaxes muscles and relieves pain and discomfort associated with strains, sprains, spasms or other muscle injuries due to a variety of causes. It has also been used off-label for fibromyalgia treatment.

NOTE: Do not use for longer than 3 weeks unless specifically instructed to do so. This medication provides temporary relief and must be used in addition to rest, physical therapy and other measures. Do not allow anyone else to take this medication.

Drug Facts for Cyclobenzaprine / Generic Flexeril

Alternate Names:

Uses:
Cyclobenzaprine (generic Flexeril) relaxes muscles and relieves pain and discomfort associated with strains, sprains, spasms or other muscle injuries due to a variety of causes. It has also been used off-label for fibromyalgia treatment.

NOTE: Do not use for longer than 3 weeks unless specifically instructed to do so. This medication provides temporary relief and must be used in addition to rest, physical therapy and other measures. Do not allow anyone else to take this medication.

What should I tell my health care provider before I take this medicine?
They need to know if you have any of these conditions:
  • glaucoma
  • heart disease
  • seizures
  • difficulty urinating
  • stroke
  • an unusual or allergic reaction to baclofen, other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives
  • pregnant or trying to get pregnant
  • breast-feeding
  • overactive thyroid gland
How to Use:
May be taken with food if stomach upset occurs. Take this medication as directed. Do not increase your dose or take it more often than prescribed.
NOTE: This medicine is only for you. Do not share this medicine with others.

Side Effects:
Symptoms you may experience while your body adjusts to the medication include:
  • stomach upset
  • heartburn
  • constipation
  • headache
  • dizziness
  • drowsiness
  • dry mouth
If these symptoms persist or become severe, notify your doctor. Inform your doctor if you develop:
  • muscle stiffness
  • skin rash
  • itching
  • rapid heart rate
  • swelling of the face
  • difficulty urinating
When rising quickly from a sitting or lying position, dizziness or lightheadedness may occur. Change positions slowly and use caution on stairs. Avoid activities requiring alertness if dizziness or drowsiness occurs. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

Precautions:
Do not suddenly stop taking your medicine. If you do, you may develop a severe reaction. If your doctor wants you to stop the medicine, the dose will be slowly lowered over time to avoid any side effects. Follow the advice of your doctor.
You may get drowsy or dizzy when you first start taking the medicine or change doses. Do not drive, use machinery, or do anything that may be dangerous until you know how the medicine affects you. Stand or sit up slowly.

Medical Interactions:
The following medications and substances may interact with cyclobenzaprine:
  • alcohol
  • antihistamines
  • medicines for depression, anxiety, and other mental conditions
  • medicines for pain like codeine, oxycodone, tramadol, and propoxyphene
  • medicines for sleep
  • phenobarbital
Tell your doctor of any over-the-counter or prescription medications you take, especially of:
  • cimetidine
  • antidepressants
  • sedatives
  • tranquilizers
  • sleeping pills
  • narcotic pain medication (e.g., codeine)
  • anti-allergy drugs
  • drugs used for asthma
  • cough-and-cold medicines
Alcohol adds to the dizziness and drowsiness caused by cyclobenzaprine. Limit alcohol intake. Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval. This list may not describe all possible interactions. Give your health care provider a list of all the medicines, herbs, non-prescription drugs, or dietary supplements you use. Also tell them if you smoke, drink alcohol, or use illegal drugs. Some items may interact with your medicine.

Overdose Information:
An overdose of cyclobenzaprine can be fatal.Call 911 or seek emergency medical attention if you think you have used too much of this medicine. Overdose symptoms may include:
  • drowsiness
  • fast heartbeat
  • tremors or shaking
  • slurred speech
  • confusion
  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • hallucinations (seeing things)
  • chest pain
  • seizures (convulsions)
Missed Dose:
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the medicine at the next regularly scheduled time. Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.

Storage:
Cyclobenzaprine tablets should be stored between 15-30 C (59-86 F).
